Alvin Plantinga on Evolution

The issue of evolution and its compatibility with religion has long been a debate in our country.   Many Christians have come to the incorrect conclusion that the theory of evolution is incompatible with the Christian faith.  This is unfortunate because it has put Christians at odds with the truth that we can observe in the universe and has created a false dichotomy that often results in having to choose between good science or one's faith.  In this interview Christian philosopher Alvin Plantinga speaks to how Christians can accept evolution and still believe in God.

It is important for the church today to realize that the historic church has not demanded a literal interpretation of Genesis.  To insist on a literal interpretation of Genesis(that the earth is 10,000 years old, or that all creation took place in six twenty-four hour periods) and therefore deny the findings of science, is a recent development that came from the rise of the modern Fundamentalist movement.  Historically, the church has accepted a non-literal, allegorical interpretation reading of the book of Genesis (St. Augustine among others).  There are many complex issues that arise in this topic between science and Christianity, however, this interview does a good job at addressing some of the common objections.  Dr. Plantiga philosopher emeritus at the University of Notre Dame and a lecturer in the area of religion and philosophy.
